The 2013 Eagle volleyball campaign came to a close after a UIL Bi-District loss to McKinney Boyd on Nov. 4th. The playoff match was the 6th consecutive time the Eagles have qualified for post-season playoffs. The team entered their final match fresh off a District 9-5A tiebreaker win over Lake Highlands on Oct. 31st. The Eagles beat Lake Highlands 3 times, including a win at the Texas Open Tournament and a district victory over the Wildcats in mid-September. Those 3 victories highlighted a District Runner-Up finish, ending with a 19-14 overall and 9-4 district record.

The wins over Lake Highlands featured lop-sided scores as well as sets where the teams traded points back-and-forth to the end. At the Allen Texas Open on Aug. 23rd, RHS was coming off 3 losses in pool play to Allen, League City Clear Creek and Rockwall. The Eagles bounced back to sweep the Wildcats 25-12, 25-20 in the best 2 of 3 tournament bracket format.

For the Sept. 20th match-up, RHS entered with a 1-1 district record, after an opening loss to Pearce. Lake Highlands was 2-0 with wins over Skyline and Berkner. The Eagles would not be denied their 2nd consecutive win over their district rival, winning by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 25-21 and 26-24.

Richardson had sole possession of 2nd place in Dist. 9-5A standings until their district finale loss at Berkner on Oct. 25th. The loss forced a two-way tie for 2nd with Lake Highlands, as the head coaches opted for a match to break the tie. The Eagles took the match played at LHHS by scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-16, 17-25, and 15-9.

For the season, the team was led by seniors Kara Marschewski, Erin Terry and Julianna Washington. Marschewski headed one of the strongest Eagle defensive units in recent years, averaging 3.11 digs per set, followed by Terry and Washington with 2.51 and 2.43 respectively. At the net and led by sophomore Brooke Harris (0.65 blocks per set), a trio that also included sophomore Brianna Lester and senior Maddie Bunch provided nearly 1.25 blocks per set. Offensively, Washington led with 2.91 kills per set followed by Terry with 2.53 and sophomore Brooke Harris with 1.78. The sophomore duo of Madison Stengel and Chelsea Roemer led the team in assists with 4.83 and 3.44 per set. The Eagles averaged over 2 aces per set, led by Terry with 45 and Stengel with 38.

The 2013 pre-season schedule was one of the strongest in recent years, with tournaments at Grapevine and Allen, where the Eagles faced some of the best Texas 5A teams. At the Texas Open, RHS faced Allen (’13 Regional semifinalist), Rockwall (’13 Bi-District champ) and League City Clear Creek (5 regional finals since ’00) and Cy Falls (’13 Regional finalist). Head-to-head matches included Rowlett (’13 Dist. 11-5A champ) and ’13 TAPPS state semifinalist Trinity Christian-Addison. RHS took District 10-4A top 3 teams Creekview and Forney both to 5 sets, ousting CHS on their 2nd day of competition. Outside of tournament competition, the Eagles posted a 16-8 record.

The 2013 team achieved 3 program milestones and set several new program statistical records. The Eagles had not beaten LHHS for 10 years, and had not finished above the Wildcats in district standings for 10 seasons. RHS had also not beaten Creekview for 3 years, since a 9-5A district match in 2009.

The Eagle program as a whole had a successful year, capped by a strong Junior Varsity headed by 4th year coach Krissy Seaman, who led the team to a 22-9 record. Freshmen A, directed by coach Sharhonda Conner, gained valuable experience ending up at 16-18, while Freshmen B coach Chandler Wright’s squad doubled their 2012 win total with an 8-16 record.
